We all know and LOVE Scoot, but doing the same thing over and over becomes boring and ineffective. So what can you do when you love Scoot (and already have the pieces) to spice things up? Here are five ways to re-use scoot in your classroom!
What is Scoot?
As a quick reminder, Scoot is a game you play with students that allows them to get up and move around the room while filling out their Scoot Answer Sheet. Students simply move from desk to desk and answer questions that you have hidden under a sticky note. While this is a great way to get kids moving and reviewing, Scoot has so many other amazing uses!
#1 Scoot Centers
One way to re-use Scoot is to put it into your literacy centers. How do you do this you might ask? Well I am glad you did! You can use your Scoot Answer sheet to have students right down what they did in each center. You can even have a final “Scoot Question” in the center the student has to put on his/her Scoot Answer Sheet to move on.
One of the great things about using Scoot Answer Keys and Scoot cards in your centers is the amount of “stuff” students have to keep track of. When students move around the room and only need one piece of paper and a writing utensil, you are stopping chaos before it has a chance to start.
#2 Scoot Task-tic
Another way you can re-use the Scoot Cards is to utilize them as Task Cards. Have your students write down the answers to the Task Cards (which you may also use in centers) on their Scoot Answer Sheet as recording mechanism. This keeps your students accountable, and it utilize a tool you already have, so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel!
#3 STEMsational Scoot Answer Key
Re-using Scoot doesn’t just have to involve the Scoot Cards. You can also re-use the Scoot Answer Key. Have your students write down things they observe when looking at an on-going classroom project. You can have your students right down key concepts or words in the boxes for each day. For example, if you are having students observe the growth of some grass and it is day 15, in the 15 spot, the students can put the height of the grass. The students could do this for however many days you have your Scoot Answer Key.
#4 Scoot Bingo!
You can also use your Scoot Cards as Bingo call cards (especially in math and with sight words!) Hold up a card that has a word all jumbled and have your students cover the word on their bingo card. You could also show them a card with a math problem. The answer would be on the bingo card and they would cover it up! By using your Scoot Cards, you are keeping everything consistent. Plus, Bingo is always a fun review game!
#5 Scoot Time!
You can also use Scoot Cards to help “fill time” if something doesn’t last quite as long. Let’s be real with ourselves, we have all had a time or two in class when we have an extra five or ten minutes before lunch or a specials class and we need to fill it before anarchy ensues. In this moments, use Scoot! Having Scoot Cards on hand will help save the day. You can have students right down the answers or go around the room for a fun game to see who can earn the most points.
No matter how you swing it, Scoot is a great game that can be used all over the classroom. Find fun ways to use Scoot in your room whether that’s to review, to help fill in a little extra time, or anything else your creative mind can think of. If you don’t have Scoot cards, you can always find them here! Happy Scooting everyone!
