Can you feel that warm breeze? It’s officially summer vibes all around, and the sun is shining! For some of us, it’s all about wrapping up the school year. While others are diving headfirst into planning for summer school. No matter where you fall on the summer learning spectrum, there’s one thing for sure; we’re all on a mission to give our kiddos the best summer send-off possible! Today we are talking about easing that summer slide and setting our students up for success when August rolls back around. I’m excited to share with you some of my favorite June activities that I always make sure to have prepped and ready to go!
June Activities for Morning Work
There’s nothing quite like starting off my students’ day with a little morning magic waiting for them at their desks. You know the drill. Some of them are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, while others are still shaking off the sleepiness when they arrive. But no matter how they stroll in, morning work brings us all together, setting the stage for a structured start to the day.
So, let’s talk about June’s morning routine! I’ve waved goodbye to May and welcomed in a fresh batch of June activities to keep the momentum rolling. These print-and-go morning work activity pages are packed with math and literacy reviews. I love using these pages in my classroom for the spiral review. My kiddos are constantly being exposed to essential skills to keep them sharp and ready for action.
Now, I understand that mornings can be a bit of a whirlwind, especially when you’ve got a classroom full of eager learners. No worries! These June morning activities are as adaptable as they come. If paper and pencil morning work isn’t really your forte, then you can turn these into a handy booklet format that’s perfect for on-the-go engagement for your early finishers. Whether they’re used in centers, sent home for independent practice, or sprinkled into our daily routine, these activities are ready whenever you need them.
And. . . if you want to send home some summer learning for your students to complete, using pages from the Morning Work Bundle will give them a great review that they can easily complete at home.
June Activities for Writing
One of the highlights of the end of year hustle is diving into my writing centers and witnessing firsthand the incredible growth my kiddos have made throughout the year. It’s truly heartwarming to see how far they’ve come. These writing prompts and exercises are a great way to review all we have learned in our writing, from complete sentences to capitalization and punctuation.
Roll-a-Story Dice Writing Activity
To keep things fresh and exciting, I like to switch up the writing prompts regularly. With June rolling in and summer right outside our windows, I make sure to keep things interesting by using some seasonal and holiday-themed prompts from my Creative Writing Prompts bundle.
Let me tell you, my students absolutely devour these prompts! They love the excitement of rolling the dice three times to piece together a sentence that becomes the topic of their story. From there, their imaginations take flight as they craft narratives bursting with excitement and creativity.
These activities are not only fantastic for wrapping up the school year, but also for keeping the momentum going during summer school. They provide a fun and engaging way to continue practicing writing skills while embracing the spirit of the season. It’s moments like these that make teaching truly worthwhile!
Summer Write the Room
With June comes a surge of energy from our kiddos that’s just waiting to be channeled into something fun and engaging. When it comes to keeping them on their toes, my go-to strategy is none other than my Summer Sight Word Scoot game! It’s like a burst of sunshine, getting them up and moving while reinforcing those important sight words.
These activities aren’t just great for keeping our students engaged. They’re also perfect for review at the end of the school year and setting the stage for summer school success. I scatter task cards around the room or assign one to each desk. Each one has symbols of summer representing different letters.
As my students make their rounds, they decipher the symbols to form sight words. Then, they jot down their discoveries on their recording page. Once we’ve gone over the rules for transitioning between cards, they’re off tackling each challenge head-on.
End of Year Memory Book
Next up is one of my absolute favorite June activities to do with my kiddos, which is crafting our end of the year memory book. My kiddos eagerly look forward to this project. I always hear how it transforms into a treasured keepsake filled with precious memories from our time together.
In my End of Year Memory Book resource, I’ve gathered a collection of templates that offer different options to cater to every student’s preferences. Each writing prompt is available in two versions. One version is with dotted lines for those who appreciate a little guidance. The other version has solid lines for those ready to unleash their creativity.
Once I have the right version prepped for my students, I have each student pick out a cover to color. From there, they dive into filling out an overview page, documenting details such as their name, age, and favorite things. There are even pages dedicated to the principal and custodian. There’s a lot of space for classmates to leave autographs, a dedicated section to jot down favorite memories from the year, and even prompts to reflect on their experiences in different classes. This project captures a snapshot of their school year journey to preserve it for years to come.
Logic June Activities
It’s incredible to see how much my students have grown from the beginning to the end of the school year through these engaging summer logic puzzles. They offer various opportunities for classroom use and spark excitement in my students’ learning journey.
At the beginning of the year, we solve these puzzles together as a class to grasp the vocabulary and strategies needed. We discuss key concepts, such as the uniqueness of symbols in each column and row, emphasizing that repetition isn’t allowed. Additionally, we ensure that each 2 x 2 square contains only one of each symbol. By June, my students typically tackle them independently during our center time. The growth in their critical thinking skills is just amazing!
I’ve found that the earlier they engage with the puzzles hands-on, the better their understanding becomes. I project the puzzle on the board, laminate the symbols, and attach magnets to their backs. Students then take turns placing the symbols on the board while following the rules. When challenges arise, we encourage discussion and stretch our thinking together. With time, students start to master the puzzles. Once they do, I transition one of the math centers into a digital center. Students work on solving the puzzle digitally, further enhancing their problem-solving skills.
These June activities foster rich conversations in the classroom, touching on themes like perseverance and adopting a growth mindset. We discuss the importance of embracing challenges and learning from mistakes. And when we finally crack the puzzle, we celebrate our success together!
The logic puzzles are perfect for summer school sessions. They provide a familiar and engaging activity for students during the summer months. Plus, they help to prevent the summer slide by keeping their minds active and sharp.
End of Year Certificates
Whether your last day is in May or June, it’s time to celebrate those amazing students of yours before they head off into the summer sun! What better way to do that than with certificates? It’s giving them a piece of recognition and showing them just how proud you are of all they’ve accomplished.
I love using my Editable Graduation Certificates because they let me tailor awards to fit each student perfectly, year after year. You can keep it the same as well for each kiddo. These make a great touch at an actual graduation or, if you’re in an in-between year, they would be a great addition to your send-off ceremony.
