October is hands down one of my favorite months! The cooler weather, the crisp sound of falling leaves, and that spooky anticipation in the air make it such a fun time. This is especially true when I get to experience it with my students. Their excitement is contagious. Though I’ll admit, sometimes it feels like I’m trying to corral a whirlwind of energy! Instead of battling it, I love leaning into all the October vibes and channeling that energy into our learning. By weaving Halloween and October-themed activities into our lessons, I keep them engaged and learning without even realizing it! So today, I’m sharing some of my favorite October activities that will keep your students both focused and fired up to learn!
October Activities for Morning Work
Incorporating morning work into my classroom routine has been a game-changer for both me and my students. Using my first-grade October morning worksheets as a resource sets the tone for a smooth and structured start to the day. Each morning, my students come in knowing exactly what to expect. They find their morning work waiting for them after they finish unpacking. They dive right into the activities. This structure helps them transition from the chaos of arrival to the focused mindset they need for the day.
The activities include coloring, number sequencing, and simple pattern work, which provides a fun yet educational start. Whether it’s creating patterns, practicing writing, or solving basic math problems, the tasks keep my students engaged without overwhelming them. Plus, they align perfectly with our October themes, like pumpkins, ghosts, and autumn leaves. Incorporating a theme makes the work even more exciting for our kiddos.
Having this consistent routine helps them settle down quickly. It gives me a few minutes to handle any morning admin tasks, like taking attendance or greeting students individually. The structure also ensures that every morning begins with meaningful learning. This makes it easier for my kids to stay on task throughout the day.
Halloween Math and Literacy Activities
For my October morning work or center activities, I love using Halloween-themed resources like the ones found in my Halloween Math and Literacy activity pages. These activities help create a fun and festive atmosphere. They also provide meaningful learning experiences that keep my kiddos engaged.
During morning work, activities such as the Halloween crossword puzzle, vocabulary exercises, and ABC order sheets help my students settle in and start thinking critically right away. The themed content draws them in. They enjoy tasks like solving a Halloween mystery phrase or working through fact and opinion questions about Halloween traditions. These exercises support literacy skills while giving them something exciting to look forward to as soon as they walk in the door.
In centers, I use activities like the Capture the Candy game, Halloween graphing exercises, and hidden mystery word puzzles. These are perfect for small groups because they encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and a little friendly competition. The variety of activities means that my students can rotate through different centers. They can practice a range of skills from math to language arts, all while staying on task and having fun with the October theme.
By using these October activities in both morning work and centers, I’m able to establish a routine that is both structured and engaging. My students know what to expect. This helps them transition smoothly into the day, while the festive content keeps them excited to learn.
October Activities to Get Them Giggling
Now that we’ve kicked off our mornings with some October activities let’s keep the Halloween spirit going with a little humor! One of my favorite ways to liven up our ELA centers is by using Halloween-themed jokes. These activities bring out a lot of smiles and giggles. They also sneak in some learning as they work on reading, comprehension, and even vocabulary.
Fall Cootie Catchers
I love using cootie catchers in my classroom, especially during the fall and Halloween seasons! They are such a fun and interactive way to incorporate October activities that get our students engaged in learning. The jokes tucked inside are always a hit with my kiddos!
For the Fall-themed cootie catcher, I use it to bring a bit of seasonal cheer into our October activities for language arts. I have students pair up, with one becoming the “operator” and the other the “selector.” They work through the cootie catcher, spelling out words and counting their way to a funny fall-themed joke. It’s a perfect way to practice spelling and number sense while keeping the classroom light and fun. Plus, jokes like “What’s worse than finding a worm in your apple? Finding half a worm!” always get the room laughing.
When we’re diving into our Halloween October activities, I switch to the Halloween-themed cootie catcher. With jokes about mummies, ghosts, and pumpkins, it’s another way to keep the Halloween excitement alive. The students love asking, “What do you call two witches living together? Broom-mates!” These cootie catchers fit right into our October centers. They help my students build social skills and enjoy some lighthearted humor.
October Coded Jokes
I also love using coded jokes in my classroom during the fall season! These activities are such a fun way to challenge my students to think critically while adding an element of mystery and humor to our lessons.
For the Fall-themed coded jokes, I use them during our ELA centers or as a quick brain break. My students love solving the riddles using the decoder. It’s a great way to sneak in a little extra practice with letters and problem-solving. It keeps things light and engaging, especially during the busier months of the school year.
When we shift into our Halloween October activities, the Halloween-themed coded jokes become a favorite. My students work together to decode silly Halloween riddles. The mix of spooky fun and problem-solving is a perfect fit for this time of year. Whether we’re using these during literacy centers or as part of our festive activities, my kiddos are always excited to solve the next coded joke.
Color By Code October Activities
Color by Code October activities are another student favorite that keeps learning fun and festive! Both the fall and Halloween-themed resources are perfect for adding a seasonal twist to math and literacy practice.
For the Fall Color by Code worksheets, I use them during centers or as a quick independent activity. My students love working on color-by-number activities. It’s a great way for them to practice key skills like addition, subtraction, and number recognition. The fall-themed pictures come to life as they complete the math problems! This keeps them engaged and gives them a sense of accomplishment when they finish their colorful artwork. It also helps them self-check their work when a color in the picture may not be matching up correctly. These fall and October activities are a fun way to reinforce math skills.
When it’s time to bring out the Halloween excitement, the Halloween Math Activities Coloring Pages are a big hit. These pages combine coloring with math problems, like addition, subtraction, and even number word practice. I use these during our math centers or as part of our Halloween celebration week. My students enjoy seeing their spooky scenes, like pumpkins and ghosts, come to life as they solve problems and color in their work. It’s the perfect way to mix math with Halloween fun!
October Activities to Practice Spelling
Halloween Task Cards
I use these Halloween Task Cards as a fun and interactive literacy center activity when planning for our October activities. Each card features a scrambled Halloween-related word, like “pumpkin” or “ghost.” My students work individually or in pairs to unscramble the words. This is such a great way to get them thinking critically while also practicing their spelling and vocabulary skills.
My kiddos love the challenge of figuring out the scrambled words. It’s a perfect way to incorporate the Halloween spirit into our literacy centers. It’s low-pressure but keeps them engaged as they work through the cards. I sometimes add a competitive twist by seeing who can unscramble the most words in a set time. That extra bit of excitement keeps the energy up!
Using these task cards during October activities helps reinforce language skills while adding a touch of spooky fun to our lessons. Plus, they’re easy to incorporate into my rotations. My students always look forward to seeing what Halloween-themed words they’ll unscramble next!
Halloween Literacy Centers for Sight Words
I enjoy using my Halloween Sight Word Task Cards during our October activities! They make practicing sight words so much more engaging. The Halloween theme adds an extra layer of fun that the kids really enjoy.
I use these task cards in my literacy centers, where students work on unscrambling sight words like “into,” “about,” and “many.” Each card challenges them to decode the scrambled letters and write the correct word on their answer sheet. It’s a great way to reinforce their sight word recognition and spelling skills while keeping things festive for Halloween.
The best part is how adaptable this activity is. I can have students work individually, in pairs, or even as a small group, allowing them to collaborate and help each other out. These cards are perfect for a quick center rotation or even as a warm-up activity before diving into larger lessons. I’ve noticed that my students are more motivated to practice their sight words, and the Halloween twist keeps them excited and focused!
Sight Word Scoot Game
I always make sure to include my Halloween Sight Word Scoot game when planning our October activities! It’s a fast-paced and engaging game that helps my students practice their sight words while keeping them active and excited.
I set up the task cards on each desk. I have each student start at their own desk with a recording sheet. When I say “Go,” they read the sight word on the card at their desk, solve for the word, and write it on their recording sheet. After 30 seconds, I call out, “Scoot!” They move to the next desk to repeat the process with a new word. The movement around the room keeps the energy high.
The best part is that this activity works great as a literacy center or a quick review session. My students always look forward to it. They also practice their focus, timing, and teamwork as they move through each round. Plus, the Halloween theme helps keep my students engaged and excited about learning!
Halloween Digital Sight Word Games
One of the most exciting October activities I use with my students is the Find the Object sight word games. I’ve created five different versions: Find the Ghost, Find the Monster, Find the Spider, Find the Pumpkin, and Find the Mummy. Each game features 15 Dolch Primer/Pre-Primer sight words, which makes it a great way to practice reading during our carpet time.
I’ll pull up the game on the board. I have my students take turns raising their hands to pick a word they believe is hiding the object. The fun part? They come up and read the word aloud to the class. If it’s read correctly, I’ll click on the word to reveal what’s behind it. The excitement builds as they hope to find, or sometimes avoid, the hidden object!
This game is super flexible. We can play it to find the object or switch it up by trying to avoid it, keeping everyone on their toes. After the object is found, we can either reset the game or keep going until every word is read. My kiddos are always eager to read and participate, making it an engaging way to work on sight words in a fun way!
Multiplication October Activities
Let’s switch gears and dive into another key skill we work on in October: multiplication! I have a few go-to resources that make practicing those times tables engaging and fun. Let me share how we keep the math magic going with these October activities for multiplication!
Multiplication BOOM Cards
For our October multiplication practice, I love using my Halloween-themed Multiplication Grids Boom Cards. They’re a fantastic digital tool that makes math more interactive and engaging for my students. Since they can be accessed on various devices, from tablets to smartboards, it’s super easy to incorporate them into our daily routine.
Each card presents a multiplication grid where our students solve problems and get instant feedback, which helps them stay motivated. The Halloween theme adds that extra layer of fun, keeping my students excited to practice their math skills while they explore grids. The best part is that these Boom Cards automatically track student progress, so I get valuable insights without extra grading time.
I usually use these Boom Cards or any of my fall-related BOOM Cards during our math centers or as an independent practice activity. They give my students the chance to work at their own pace. They’re perfect for October because they reinforce key multiplication concepts in a way that feels more like a game than traditional drills!

Halloween Multiplication Activity
For practicing multiplication in October, I love using my Halloween-themed two-digit by one-digit multiplication activity. Each problem reveals a fun Halloween riddle or joke as students work through the multiplication problems. For example, “What do you call a witch’s garage?” These little jokes add more engagement and keep my students motivated to finish each problem.
I have each student work on solving each multiplication problem. Once they’ve figured out the answer, they can decode a letter to solve the riddle. This format keeps them focused and excited as they move through the worksheet, which makes what could be a repetitive task much more fun.
I often include this activity in my math centers or assign it as independent work. It’s a perfect blend of Halloween excitement and essential math practice. My students always enjoy discovering the punchline after all their hard work!
October Activities for Early Finishers
I always make sure I’ve got a stash of October activities ready for my early finishers. You know how it is. There’s always that one student who zooms through their work! Having engaging, themed activities on hand keeps them busy and excited. It’s a great way to reinforce skills without missing a beat. Let me share some of my options for those quick finishers!
Word Searches
For my early finishers or as a fun break activity, I love using my Halloween word searches in our October activities. They’re a great way to keep my students engaged while practicing vocabulary related to Halloween themes. Whether it’s finding spooky words like “ghost,” “pumpkin,” or “skeleton,” my kiddos get excited to see how many words they can discover in the mix.
I often use these word searches as an independent activity when my students finish their work early. They’re also great for small group challenges. I’ll sometimes time them to see how quickly they can find all the words. This adds a little friendly competition into the mix. It’s a fun, low-pressure way for my students to practice their spelling and vocabulary, all while keeping that October excitement alive!
Halloween Crossword
I love using this Halloween crossword puzzle as part of our October activities! It’s a fun way to combine literacy skills with some festive Halloween fun. Each clue is tied to a word, like “vampire,” “coffin,” or “witch,” and the students enjoy using their knowledge to fill in the blanks. Not only does it challenge their spelling and vocabulary, but it also keeps them engaged because who doesn’t love a Halloween-themed puzzle?
I usually use this activity during literacy centers or as a bonus task for early finishers. It’s the perfect blend of learning and fun. My students are always eager to work together or independently to solve the crossword. Plus, it gives them a chance to reinforce their knowledge of Halloween-related words while practicing problem-solving and critical thinking. It’s such an easy and enjoyable way to celebrate the season while keeping our focus on learning!
Fall Suduku
I also love using these Fall Sudoku puzzles as part of our October activities! They’re a fantastic way to help my students develop their logic and reasoning skills. They get to do this all while having fun with fall symbols like apples, leaves, scarecrows, and pumpkins. My kiddos get so excited when they realize they can solve these puzzles on their own!
I project the color Sudoku puzzles on the whiteboard. We work through the first few as a class. I love seeing my students collaborate and explain their thinking to each other as they figure out where each symbol goes. It’s a great way to build problem-solving skills while encouraging teamwork. After we’ve tackled a few together, I will add them to our math centers as a more independent challenge. I also keep black-and-white worksheet versions on hand for my early finishers. They’re perfect for those who need an extra challenge.
